Handloom and handicraft industry is the backbone of the rural economy of India — it’s the second largest rural income provider after agriculture.

“India has seven million artisans. However, unofficial sources say the number could be as high as 200 million. The majority of India’s artisans are located in rural and semi-urban areas. They are employed by nearly 4,000 traditional handicrafts and handloom clusters.”
